An intricate and fine Georgian 18 karat yellow gold black enamelled broad mourning ring, inscribed in gold onto the black enamel “In Memory Of” with a small shell-like motif. The edge of the band is finely ribbed. Inside the band of this antique ring is inscribed ‘Sus' (presumably Susannah) Wight Ob 14th January 1823 Ob. 83’. We assume the ring would have been crafted shortly after the passing of Susannah, therefore making her birth date about 1740, which is quite remarkable. This ring has rather indistinct hallmarks, possibly for Sheffield Assay around the date of 1823. A lovely example of an antique mourning ring that retains a contemporary feel.
A good example of this style of mourning ring in very wearable condition.
