Edwardian Moonstone and Sapphire 9ct Gold Festoon Necklace Circa 1905

A beautiful Edwardian 9ct gold moonstone necklace comprising 25 oval moonstones of various sizes set in a rubbed over setting with a faceted  sapphire drop to complete this antique festoon. A delicate design with gold festoon links, displaying alluring opalescent lustre with pleasing blue and turquoise hues. The chain fastens with an ‘S’ shape clasp and added safety chain. With such a fabulous item we are reminded of the Pre-Raphaelite jewels and there’s definitely any Arts & Crafts feel to the piece. Moonstones were also popular during the Art Nouveau period when lesser gemstones were incorporated into jewellery for aesthetic reasons rather than their intrinsic value.

Moonstones, are known for their apparent mystical properties:

“Since earliest times, Moonstone has been a tangible connection to the magic of the moon – an amulet of protection for travellers, a gift of lovers for passion, a channel for prophecy, and a path to wisdom.”
